That is the whole game. The tricky parts are repeated letters, hard mode and picking a good first word, so this guide covers each one with real examples. Try the practice board below first. It runs on a sample puzzle and explains every tile as you go.

Canuckle rules in brief
- There is one hidden word, and it is five letters long.
- You have six rows, so six guesses.
- Each guess has to be a real five-letter word. Random strings such as AEIOU are rejected and do not cost you a row.
- Your guesses do not need to be Canadian. Only the answer has the Canadian link.
- Press Enter to submit a row, and the tiles flip to show their colours.
- Win by turning all five tiles red. If row six is wrong, the answer is shown.
Answers come from everywhere in Canadian life: animals (MOOSE, LOONS), places (BANFF, YUKON), food (SYRUP, POUTINE in the longer weekly game), slang (HOSER, TOQUE) and history (SPIKE, for the last spike of the Canadian Pacific Railway). A short fun fact after each game explains the link.
What the tile colours mean
Canuckle uses red where Wordle uses green, a nod to the flag. Everything else about the colours works the same way.

The keyboard under the board keeps score too. Keys turn red, yellow or grey as you use them, so a quick glance tells you which letters are still unused. If red and yellow are hard to tell apart, the settings menu on this site has a colour-blind option that swaps them for orange and blue.
How repeated letters are scored
This is where most new players get confused. The rule: the game colours only as many copies of a letter as the answer actually has. Exact matches are coloured first, then any copies left over go yellow from left to right, and extra copies turn grey.
Example 1: guessing GEESE when the answer is MAPLE
MAPLE has one E, and it is in the last spot. So the final E in GEESE turns red, and the other two Es turn grey. G and S are grey as well. The grey Es do not mean "no E". They mean "no more Es than the one you already found".
Example 2: guessing LLAMA when the answer is MAPLE

The first L is yellow because MAPLE has an L, just not in spot one. The second L is grey because MAPLE has only one L, and it was already counted. The same thing happens with the two As. One yellow and one grey copy of a letter is a strong clue: the answer has exactly one of it.
Example 3: guessing SPEED when the answer is GEESE
The E in spot three is red. The E in spot four is yellow, because GEESE has a second E that is not in spot four. S is yellow, P and D are grey. Two coloured Es tell you the answer has at least two.
Repeated letters matter in Canuckle. In the daily answers since February 2022, about one word in three has a repeated letter, from GEESE and MOOSE to BANFF and SCOFF. If you are stuck with three or four letters found, try doubling one.
A full game, guess by guess
Here is a real answer, PUCKS (puzzle #141, June 30, 2022), played from a common opener.
- STARE. S is yellow. T, A, R and E are grey. So there is an S, but not at the start.
- COULD. C and U are yellow, the rest are grey. Now we know S, C and U are in the word, and none of them sit where we tried them. Words that still fit include BUCKS, MUCKS, PUCKS, YUCKS and MUSIC.
- BUMPS. This guess cannot be the answer, since C is missing. It is chosen to test B, M and P in one go. U turns red in spot two, S turns red in spot five, P turns yellow, and B and M are grey. Only one word now fits.
- PUCKS. Five red tiles.
Guessing BUCKS, then MUCKS, then PUCKS could have burned every row. One "test" guess that covers several possible letters is often the faster route when many words share the same pattern.
Hard mode
Hard mode makes you use what you have found. On this site, once a letter turns red it must stay in that spot in every later guess, and any yellow letter must appear somewhere in your next guesses. Wordle's hard mode works the same way.
In the PUCKS game above, BUMPS would be refused in hard mode, because it leaves out C, which was yellow. You would have to guess a word that keeps S, C and U, such as BUCKS or MUCKS, and take your chances. That is why hard mode feels tougher on answers with many look-alikes.
Turn hard mode on or off from the settings before your first guess of the day. It cannot be switched on halfway through a game. Results played in hard mode are marked with a star when you share them.
Good starting words for Canuckle
A good first word tests common letters. We counted letters across more than 1,600 daily Canuckle answers from February 2022 to October 2026. E appears in 46% of answers, S and A in about 38% each, R in 36% and O in 31%. J, Q, X and Z are rare.

The difference between the top openers is small, so pick one you like and stick with it for a while. You will learn how its colours usually play out.
Two patterns in the answer list are worth knowing. S is the most common last letter, ending about 18% of daily answers, so plurals such as PUCKS, LOONS and LAKES do turn up. And S, C and B are the most common first letters.

Everyone gets the same daily word, so your streak and results can be compared. Unlimited picks a fresh word each round and keeps its own score, so it never touches your daily streak. The weekly Plus game follows the same colour rules with a longer word and keeps its own stats too.
Sharing your result
When a game ends, tap Share. You get the puzzle number, your score out of six and a grid of red, yellow and white squares, one row per guess. No letters are shown, so friends can see how you did without the answer being spoiled. On a phone it opens your share menu; on a computer it copies to the clipboard, ready to paste into a chat. An X instead of a number means the puzzle beat you that day.
Tips that help most
- Think Canadian once you have two or three letters. A pattern like _ _ O S E has many English answers, but MOOSE and GOOSE come to mind first for a reason.
- Do not reuse grey letters unless you are making a deliberate test guess.
- Move yellow letters to a new spot each time. Never put a yellow letter back where it went yellow.
- Remember doubles and plurals. Both are common in the answer list.
- Use a test guess when four or more words fit the same pattern, as in the PUCKS game.
