How Unlimited Canuckle works
The rules are the same as the daily Canuckle. You have six guesses to find a five letter word, and every guess has to be a real word. After each try the tiles change colour:
- Red: the letter is in the word and in the right spot.
- Yellow: the letter is in the word but in a different spot.
- Grey: the letter is not in the word.
The difference is what happens when you finish. Instead of a countdown to tomorrow, you get a button to play again, and a new word is picked at random. The game also avoids handing you a word you have just played, so a long session keeps feeling new.
The Hint and New word buttons
Above the board there are two small buttons that you will not find on the daily game.
Hint gives you a short clue for the current word. Use it when you are down to your last couple of guesses and nothing fits. It is a nudge, not the answer, so you still get to finish the word yourself.
New word skips the current round. If you have not guessed yet, it simply swaps in another word. If you are partway through, the game asks before giving up, and that round counts as a loss. It is there for the times you know you are beaten and would rather move on.
Does unlimited play affect my daily streak?
No. Unlimited rounds keep their own record, separate from the daily game. You can lose ten practice words in a row and your daily streak will be exactly where you left it. Both sets of stats are stored in your browser on this device, so there is no account to make. Clearing your browser data resets them.
Your settings carry over. If you have hard mode, the dark theme or high contrast colours switched on for the daily puzzle, unlimited rounds use them too.
Why play Canuckle unlimited
Practise without risking a streak
The daily puzzle is one shot a day, and that makes people careful. Unlimited is where you can be careless on purpose. Try a starting word you have never used, play a second guess that cannot possibly be right just to see what it reveals, or turn on hard mode to see if you can manage it. A bad round costs you nothing.
Learn the Canadian words
Every answer still has a link to Canada. The more rounds you play, the faster you start to spot the kinds of words that come up: places, animals, food, sport, history and the odd bit of slang. That pays off when you go back to the daily word, because the right answer comes to mind sooner.
Find your best opener
Pick a starting word and use it for twenty rounds, then switch to another for the next twenty. The guess distribution in your stats shows how many rows each win took, so you can see which opener gets you there sooner. Words that cover common letters, like STARE, ROAST, TRAIL or SNARE, are good ones to compare.
Tips for Unlimited Canuckle
- Use guess two for new letters. If your first row is mostly grey, play five letters you have not tried yet instead of trying to guess the answer.
- Move yellow letters. A yellow tile tells you the letter is in the word and also where it is not. Put it somewhere new next time.
- Think about double letters. When you are stuck with three or four letters found, the answer may repeat one, like the two Os in MOOSE.
- Remember your guesses can be any word. Only the answer has to be Canadian. Ordinary English words are fine for testing letters.
- Take the hint before guess six, not after. A clue is far more useful when you still have two rows to work with.
Daily, unlimited or Plus?
Each Canuckle game on the site has its own job. The daily word is the one everyone plays, with a streak and notes on the word at the end. Unlimited is for practice and for anyone who just wants more. Canuckle Plus is a longer six or seven letter puzzle that changes every Monday, for when five letters starts to feel easy.
