Blossom Solver

This Blossom solver finds every word you can make from the flower's seven letters, always including the centre letter, and ranks them by points for whichever petal is the bonus. Since you only get twelve words per game, it helps you spend each one on a high scorer.

How to use the Blossom solver

  1. Type the centre letter of the flower into the first box.
  2. Type the six petal letters into the second box, in any order.
  3. Tap the petal that is the bonus letter in your game. It turns gold on the flower. Tap it again to clear it.
  4. Press Find words. The solver shows the best words for every petal, then a full ranking for your chosen bonus letter with a breakdown of where each word's points come from.

Change the bonus petal at any time and the ranking updates straight away, with no need to search again. Tick Also show rarer words if you want extra dictionary words in the ranking. They appear in lighter text because the game may not accept them.

Blossom rules in brief

  • Every word needs at least four letters and must use the centre letter.
  • Letters can be used more than once in the same word.
  • A game is twelve words long, so you choose which words to play rather than trying to find them all.
  • Longer words score more. A pangram, which uses all seven letters, earns 7 extra points.
  • Each use of the bonus petal letter in a word adds 5 points, so a word with the bonus letter twice gets 10.
  • Proper nouns and hyphenated words are not allowed.

Worked example: centre R with E, C, A, T, B, O

We tried a made-up flower with R in the middle and E, C, A, T, B and O on the petals, and picked T as the bonus. The solver found 90 words from its main list, including 1 pangram, CORROBORATE.

With T as the bonus, the top of the ranking looked like this:

RankWordPointsWhy
1CORROBORATE36Long word, pangram bonus, one T
2ATTRACT27Three Ts give 15 bonus points
3BARRETTE25Two Ts
3CATARACT25Two Ts

Switching the bonus to O pushed CORROBORATE up to 46 points, because it has three Os. That is the kind of swing the per-petal table is there to show you.

Strategy tips for a higher Blossom score

  • Save the pangram for a good petal. A pangram is often the best word on every petal, but you can only play it once. Check the per-petal table and play it when the bonus letter appears in it several times.
  • Hunt for repeated bonus letters. Every copy of the bonus letter is worth 5 points. A seven letter word with the bonus letter three times can beat a much longer word that has it once, as ATTRACT shows above.
  • Do not waste turns on four letter words. With only twelve plays, a short word with no bonus letter is close to a lost turn. Use the ranking to keep every play above a points target you set yourself.
  • Think about suffixes. Endings like -ER, -ED, -ATE and -ING stretch a word by two or three letters, and length counts for a lot.
  • Plan for the rest of the game. The top three words for each petal sit side by side in the table, so you can see which strong words are worth holding back for later turns.

A note on the word list

Merriam-Webster uses its own list of accepted words for the game. The solver's main list sticks to everyday English words, which line up well, but now and then the game will reject a word the solver suggests or accept one it does not show. If a word is refused, the next one down the ranking is usually only a point or two behind.
